About The Whisky Warrant

Experience earned. Whisky explored.

Mission Statement

The Whisky Warrant exists to document, explore, and better understand whisky through honest learning, thoughtful tasting, and independent discovery — with a strong focus on Australian whisky and the people who make it.

This site is about curiosity over credentials, substance over hype, and enjoying whisky as a journey rather than a destination.

Who’s Behind The Whisky Warrant

After almost 30 years of service in the Royal Australian Navy, serving as a Warrant Officer and submariner, I found myself looking for a new challenge — something I could continue throughout the remainder of my naval career and carry with me into retirement.

I’m not a professional whisky connoisseur, critic, or industry insider. I’m simply someone who enjoys a good dram, likes asking questions, and wants to better understand the water of life. The Whisky Warrant is a personal learning project — a place to document that journey openly, honestly, and without pretence.

Where It All Began

My whisky journey didn’t start in a tasting room or at a distillery, but at a family celebration.

In 2016, at my brother-in-law’s engagement party, my wife and I were asked to be part of the wedding party. To mark the occasion, he produced a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label — the fanciest whisky I knew of at the time — to raise a toast.

Back then, whisky for me always included ginger ale and ice. Not wanting to offend by mixing such an expensive bottle, I politely declined and raised my glass with a beer instead. At the time, I had no idea how pivotal that moment would eventually become.

Discovering Whisky — Properly

Several years later, I decided it was time to broaden my horizons. I began experimenting with whisky neat and on the rocks, starting with cheaper, mass-produced bottles. To my palate, they all tasted much the same — harsh, sharp, and uninviting.

Everything changed when I came across a news article about Sullivan’s Cove Whisky. The Tasmanian distillery had just won the 2018 and 2019 World Whisky Awards for World’s Best Single Malt Single Cask. Intrigued, I signed up for their ballot system, hoping to secure a bottle from a future release. My first attempt was unsuccessful. So was my second.

What I did receive, however, was an invitation for a complimentary tasting at their Hobart distillery. As luck would have it, I was already heading to Tasmania for Christmas, so I took them up on the offer.

That tasting was a revelation.

I was immediately impressed — not just by the whisky itself, but by the depth, balance, and care behind it. I left with two bottles, purchased as keepsakes for future milestones. More importantly, I left with a new passion. From that moment on, I was hooked.

Realising How Much I Didn’t Know

As my interest grew, so did my collection — but my understanding did not.

That reality became clear in 2025 when I contacted a Tasmanian distillery to enquire about purchasing a private cask. The process quickly highlighted just how much I didn’t yet understand about whisky making — the decisions involved, the time required, and the patience demanded.

Rather than rushing in, I made the deliberate decision to pause and properly educate myself before taking that step.

That decision marked the true beginning of this journey.

Why The Whisky Warrant Exists

The Whisky Warrant exists to document that learning process — not just for myself, but for others who are curious about whisky and unsure where to begin.

This site is a place to:

  • Record tasting experiences and impressions

  • Explore how whisky is made and matured

  • Learn about distilleries, styles, and regions

  • Share honest, independent opinions without hype

I’ve made a conscious decision to focus predominantly on Australian whisky, exploring local distilleries and showcasing the quality, diversity, and craftsmanship emerging from our own backyard.

There are no paid reviews here, no chasing trends, and no claims of expertise — just genuine curiosity and earned experience.

Service, Transition & Awareness

Having spent most of my adult life in uniform, I’m conscious that military service shapes people in lasting ways. For those currently serving and for veterans alike, finding balance, purpose, and identity beyond the role can be both rewarding and challenging.

The Whisky Warrant is, in part, my own example of building something meaningful alongside service and beyond it — a pursuit grounded in curiosity, patience, and structure. While this site isn’t a direct platform for fundraising, I hope it contributes in a small way to awareness around service, transition, and the importance of constructive post-service pursuits.

The Whisky Warrant Philosophy

In naval service, a warrant represents experience earned over time — trust built through discipline, responsibility, and continuous learning rather than rank alone. The Whisky Warrant applies that same philosophy to whisky.

This site isn’t about claiming authority. It’s about earning understanding — through tasting widely, learning continuously, and respecting the craft behind every bottle. Opinions are personal, independent, and shaped by experience, not marketing or sponsorship.

Attention to detail matters. So does patience. Whisky takes time, and learning to appreciate it properly takes time as well. The Whisky Warrant stands for honest exploration, informed appreciation, and sharing knowledge without intimidation.

There are no shortcuts here — just good whisky, good questions, and a willingness to learn.
